Timothy Pledger

Timothy's composition range from solo, through small chamber and jazz outfits, to orchestra, large free jazz ensemble and electronica, utilising devices and forms that are unique to his creative intent. Timothy's compositional terrain exists within the structural development of rhythmic harmony moving against itself over time. For this he uses a system entitled 'The Common Tone Theory'. Timothy's compositions, including those for dance, theatre and film, have been performed in festivals such as 'Midsumma Festival', Melbourne Fringe, Melbourne Jazz Fringe, Darebin Music Feast, and his music videos have being played at the 'Big Day Out' and on 'Rage'. His composition 'deep in the bushes' is the soundtrack for the latest documentary, 'Transformation' by Iranian Filmmaker, Vahid Vahed.

Winner of the 1997 Athenaeum Award for composition for Jazz ensemble, and selected for the 1998 Paul Dainty Creative Development Workshops for Emerging Composers and Performing Artists at the VCA, Timothy went on to complete his Honours Degree in Composition at Monash University and is currently completing a Master of Music at Melbourne University.

Timothy has composed for and produced 10 albums for his ensembles including 'Bohjass', 'Sufi Dervish', 'Uncle E.', incorporating free jazz, rock, drum and bass and electronica. He plays in a variety of contexts including 'Opa', (a Balkan Brass band), Wildflower (Jazz/Bossa Nova), 'The Boys' (Jazz), Yurodivye (Russian Folk music) and 'Tim Pledger's Product', (Free Jazz with its focus on the bass clarinet).

Timothy Pledger is a Melbourne based composer, musician and film artist. Tim composes acoustic, electric, electronic and orchestral works using a diverse range of forms and materials from highly minimalistic and personal to expressive and extreme emotional structures.

Timothy is deeply involved in the tonal and emotional aspects of rhythmic harmony as they move against each other in blocks and waves of sound.

Tim's musical, filmic and written works are concerned with the landscape of the culture and politics of the environment they are created within, and are therefore personal indictments or appraisals of certain aspects of society.

Tim's longest running ensemble, "bohjass", has been critically acclaimed both in Australia and abroad and many of Australia's great improvisors have played at some stage in this ensemble.
